Sharing Web Resources

The newsletter that I subscribe was the National Head Start program. Even though I am
a teacher in the Early Head Start program I wanted to know what is going on with the National
Head Start Programs around the world. Basically the programs are the same but they just
deal with different age groups. My concerns are the budget cuts that is happening
around the different states. In Durham, North Carolina which I am from we had a 120
slots available for children in the Early Head Start program. Ten percent of them children
they have to take is children with special needs. They took away 20 slots which was home based
programs. That was a disappointment to our teachers, parents, and the community.
The newsletter caught my attention by how major the cuts are affected children, teachers
and families all around the world. The organization focus how can we prevent these budget cuts
and we can make it better for our families that are living in poverty. Congress believes that the
budget cuts are harmless and can be ignored. As teachers, educators, parents, legislative,
and the community we have to show congress how painful these cuts are in our own community.

  1. Shartarka, reading about the Head Start cuts is so troubling. Funding to support essential services for at-risk children is woefully inadequate in this country. If only we could cut waste and fraud to free up resources and apply them where they are most needed! Congressional investigators said in a report released yesterday that Social Security made $1.3 billion in improper disability payments to people who had jobs when they were supposed to be unable to work. Can you imagine what $1.3 billion would do for our nation if it was applied to early care and education? -Susan

  2. Shartarka thank you for sharing this news letter. I work for Regional Head Start and I'm going to subscribe as well. My center was affected by the budget cut as well. We are closed for the entrire month of December, Our hours were cut from 40 hours a week to 35 hours a week, 2 early head start classrooms were completly shut down, and we no longer offer transportation.

  3. Shartarka,

I'm sure it's frustrating when we hear how much government funding is "supposedly" going into these programs but yet cuts are being made each year! I am very curious to learn more about your experiences as someone who already works in a Head Start program. Hopefully there's an opportunity down the line for you to share more of your experiences.

  4. Susan, Tiffany, and Sherry these was some serious cuts this year and if these cuts keep happen how can parents improve themselves of getting a job and an education. The Early Head Start and the Head Start programs suppose to help the poverty issues that is going around the world. If we keep having these cuts there mean no jobs for teacher who is going to teach the little children.
